Back in February I shorted BMHC and I had to wait until June for that idea to appear smart.

Last month I shorted home furnishing companies, and deja vu all over - they went up.
WHR - maker of vaccum cleaners, dishwashers, refigerators
CPWM - Cost Plus provides all those nifty candle holders and fixtures
ETH - Ethan Allen is a premier couch & furniture manufacturer

These companies face an uphill battle because they are retail AND housing. Walmart, Home Depot, & Sears all announced slower sales at their stores. Retail is slowing.

I think the slowdown in new home sales means much lower demand for couches and fridges. On top of that, I think folks have already upgraded their home appliances and couches. And the big ticket items are a little harder to buy with today's interest rates. This will pressure sales and margins.

Then I see problems at NVL and RSH. Novellis is an aluminum company which is in default on its bonds AND hasn't done its financials for several quarters. Radioshack has fabulous shopping mall reach but they face two problems. Competition from Circuit City and Best Buy. And their target shoppers tend to be blue collar not upscale shoppers.
